XIII DEATH

Updated: Aug 27

There is no doubt that “Death” is an image that brings fear, if not downright terror,

to “The Fool”. Here we see “Death” on horseback trampling through a field where people from all social classes are either dead or dying. The origins of this card can possibly be traced back to the Black Death that wiped out a huge European population in The Middle Ages.

The image reminds us that nobody can escape the grim reaper’s sweep; it speaks to the democracy of death in which no one- rich or poor, young or old- is spared. The fact that we see a rising or setting sun in the background doesn’t make it less perturbing as “Death” is also often depicted carrying a sickle and trampling over corpses underfoot.
