It’s only a matter of time before “The Fool” is faced with making a very important decision in his life. The card of “Love” -as it was originally called- represents a decision one must make that will also affect others. Often, this card is seen as a choice involving matters of the heart. This may be true in some cases, but in a broader sense, it is a reminder of the validity and importance of making a choice of any type with the heart (intuition) as opposed to deciding with the mind (intellect).
In “The Lovers” card, we see Cupid or Eros. In many decks, he is a silhouetted and blindfolded figure who is not able to discern the colour of the arrow he is about to shoot. The golden one represents virtuos love while the leaden one represents sensual passion. This image represents the notion that there is a force at work that we may not be aware of when making a decision. If we can acknowledge this and allow our choice to be guided by our authentic self, and not by what seems the immediately logical thing to do, we can better aim for the highest good of all involved.
